It all began during the couchgate scandal. You know, the one involving JD Vance, a non-consenting couch, and some comments about cat ladies? If you missed it, consider yourself lucky. But for those of us tuned into the absurdities of politics, it was the kind of saga that left us groaning one moment and laughing hysterically the next. We’re talking eye-roll-inducing commentary, memes galore, and an internet ripe for a touch of mischief.
One day, I sent a text to my mom that went something like this, “What if we create an Instagram account so ridiculous, so cat-astrophically petty, that it becomes more popular than JD Vance himself?” I was half-kidding. But then I thought, Why not? After all, the Harris/Walz ticket needed some high-energy online activists, and the thought of elevating Democratic candidates up and down the ballot with a couch-potato metaphor seemed oddly… purr-fect. Cats were already internet royalty. Combine them with a couch and some salty political commentary? It was a recipe made for chaos. Good chaos.

Thus, Cats on a Couch was born.
A Joke That Took on a Life of Its Own
Admittedly, at first, my lofty aspirations were limited to giggling at the absurdity of it all, sipping coffee, and posting cat memes that doubled as political commentary. Would we even reach 500 followers? Who cared? It was meant to be a delightful little corner of the internet where cat lovers and chaos seekers could gather to snark, support, and maybe pause for a unison “meow” of frustration at current events.
Fast forward a bit, and well, things spiraled—in the best possible way. Today, Cats on a Couch boasts more than 825,000 brilliantly loyal, utterly hilarious, and fantastically supportive followers. 🐾 Yup, you read that right. Somehow, this kooky experiment outmaneuvered JD Vance’s milestones (though admittedly, setting the bar there wasn’t overly ambitious). What started as a feline-flavored Instagram rebellion is now a bona fide movement.
A Haven for Humor in Chaos
Here’s the thing about cats (and life): they remind you not to take everything so seriously. They sit (smugly) on our laps or our furniture, comforting us with their purring while the world outside feels alarmingly unstable.
Cats on a Couch isn’t just an Instagram account. It’s a place where laughter and activism coexist. It’s where Democrats and liberals who often feel smothered by outrage culture can come to breathe, vent, and rally. Sure, some of our content is gloriously petty—I’m still proud of the “cat digging in JD Vance’s metaphorical litter box” posts—but beyond the snark lies a deeper, intentional mission. We’re amplifying progressive voices, calling out injustice, and pushing for positive change while keeping humor at the forefront.
We’ve raised awareness (and funds!) for candidates at every level of government. We’ve seen cats become unlikely symbols of resistance. And we’ve shown what happens when political activism meets… well, paws and humor. We’re building momentum while giving folks a reason to smile—even if it’s just at a cat in a fancy sweater.
Good Trouble & Great Community
John Lewis famously coined the phrase “good trouble,” and it’s something I think about a lot when posting or brainstorming. Sure, we’ll never be as serious as a grassroots PAC, but “good trouble” comes in many forms. Even a meme about cats on couches has the power to spark meaningful conversations or call attention to important issues.
But what makes me pinch myself daily is this community we’ve created. 825,000 people (and counting) are tuned in. They comment, share, and often go above and beyond to help amplify messages, support candidates, and fund causes that matter. That’s the magic of Cats on a Couch. It’s not about me. It’s about us.
Where We’re Heading Next
Who knows what comes next for Cats on a Couch? We might dig even deeper into connecting our followers with tangible ways to create change. Maybe the next step is a book, a podcast, or supporting key local campaigns stealthily through cat-themed yard signs. The possibilities are endless.
One thing’s for sure, though... we’ll keep clawing our way through the noise, creating scroll-stopping, laugh-inducing content while doing our small part to make the world a bit brighter and better.
So, if you haven’t joined the couch revolution yet, what are you waiting for? Pull up a cushion, grab a snack (our cats recommend tuna), and follow along for a mix of humor, hope, and, yes, cat pics aplenty.
Welcome to Cats on a Couch. Keep laughing. Keep resisting. And most importantly, never underestimate the power of a joke to start a movement.
