Meowtucket Update: Our Masshole Meowlitia Welcome for JD Vance
JD Vance just cast a tie-breaking vote to strip Medicaid from millions, and rip food out of the mouths of children. So - we have something to say about his $250,000-per-couple dinner on Nantucket.
Calling All Cool Cats to Nantucket!
Hey Petty Besties -
On July 22nd, 2025, Vice President JD Vance will be visiting the island of Nantucket, off the coast of Massachusetts. Since this is the home state of Cats on a Couch, it is only proper that we provide him with a most excellent Meowlitia welcome.
Here are the details. Please note, these details are fluid and will become more concrete as the event approaches, but we hope that this outline will help those who are making plans to attend.
Event Details
📅 Date: July 22nd
⏰ Time: 2PM rally, with protests and standouts to follow along the route from the Nantucket Airport to his dinner location.
📍 Location: Nantucket Island
Time is of the essence—don’t miss this purr-sistently important stand against injustice, make sure you get your ferry tickets ASAP.
Event Details 🛟
This event will be hosted by Cats on a Couch, and co-hosted by Indivisible Nantucket, Indivisible Upper Cape, MASS50501, MidCape Indivisible, Indivisible Outer Cape and CCWFC.
This mobilization effort is in protest to JD Vance’s upcoming fundraiser dinner, and in protest of the harmful policies of the current administration.
The fundraising dinner event will be held at a private residence on the Island, by former Putnam CEO Bob Reynolds, his wife Laura Reynolds, Dave Kelsey of Hamilton Point Investments, Ozzie Palomo of Chartwell Strategy Group, and others.
The ticketed event runs $250,000 per couple to be on the host committee, and $100,000 per couple to attend the event.
Typically and historically, these public figures arrive to the Island by plane. A few locals have reached out letting us know that they typically start to hear murmurings of activity in the weeks leading up, so we will update this toolkit as we get more info.
What is “Cats on a Couch”? 🐈
Cats on a Couch is a viral social media presence that started in jest following JD Vance’s resurfaced “childless cat lady” comments during the 2024 election cycle. The entire point of their Instagram account was to have more followers than JD Vance, and to draw support and attention for the Harris Walz ticket.
In the months since the election, Cats on a Couch has taken on a new life. Much of the mission remains the same, to have more followers than JD Vance, but they also use their growing platform to call out the current administration on a daily basis, serving as a news source for many, a bright spot in political commentary, and “making sure that JD Vance doesn’t know a moments peace for the next four years”.
Coming up on one year since the account’s creation, Cats on a Couch has amassed over 980,000 followers on Instagram, over 260,000 on Threads, and hundreds of thousands more across Facebook, Tiktok, BlueSky and Substack. They post daily political commentary as well as opportunities for “Good Trouble”, as well as funny cat videos and cat pictures as a means of breaking up the heaviness.
When asked about Cats on a Couch and it’s role moving forward, creator Amanda McGonigle had this to say: “What’s wonderful about this little community of good troublemakers is that it makes resistance almost more accessible in a way. Fascism and authoritarianism thrive in creating fear, and using humor to combat that fear gives people the courage to speak out. You can’t be afraid if you’re laughing.”
When asked about some of the good trouble they’ve gotten into, she said “Well, every night, thousands of people flood the official VP Instagram account and leave ‘meows’ in his comments. It’s not trouble - per se - but you know that there is an intern somewhere whose sole responsibility is to tell him what is happening on his social channels. But that little bit of petty activism has lead to more meaningful action from the “Meowlitia”, what the followers of Cats on a Couch call themselves.
The daily meowing lead the way for more meaningful trouble, when the Meowlitia went after the Heritage Foundation’s Feedback form on their website. Heritage Foundation, the authors and architects of Project 2025, had a feedback form seeking commentary on the DOGE cuts, and Cats on a Couch followers flooded the form with rogue commentary. Hard to collect proper data when all of your submissions are “meow”. They also reserved all of Donald Trump’s “Trump 2028” merchandise so that no one could buy it, and crashed the site. More recently, during the passage of the Big Ugly Bill, the Meowlitia flooded the social media accounts of every moderate Republican in Congress urging them to vote “no.”
”Just because I’m not afraid to put myself on the line in the face of hate and authoritarianism, doesn’t mean others are ready to do that.”, she said. Not everyone is going to step into activism or fighting fascism with a loud bang, or staging a sit-in in the Capitol Rotunda or putting their body on the line between ICE and a neighbor. If history has taught us anything, it’s that time is of the essence, and so if some people will need the encouragement to dip their toes into getting into good trouble, then Cats on a Couch is going to find a way to ease people into activism so that, when it counts, people are warmed up to the idea of activism ahead of the midterms and the 2028 election; amassing a group of likeminded individuals who can throw their weight behind the best progressive candidates for the job.
Good Trouble on the Island 😈
We’ve created some WANTED posters with the hopes of getting them up anywhere and everywhere on the Island starting the night before his visit, and then plastering them around all morning on July 22nd.
(Link to PDFs here) They’re free downloads! Hang them wherever you want.

We will be hosting a rally at 2:00 PM at the park near the airport. Attendees should plan on a ferry arrival prior to 2 PM.
Additional Good Trouble plans for the day include:
- Signholding and protests at available points including the park, the airport, the motorcade route, the dinner location, and more.
- We will have a ground crew doing satirical "interviews" on the streets with flyers asking people "have you seen this person?".
- flyers/posters going up anywhere and everywhere that morning.
- Inflatable couch parades
…and so much more.

What We’re Fighting For
Why Cats (and Humans) Must Speak Up
Vice President JD Vance isn’t just guilty of offensive rhetoric—his policies directly harm the most vulnerable members of our society. From the cruel Big Ugly Bill to ballooning ICE funding that tears families apart, the stakes couldn’t be higher. Here’s what we’re demanding in MEOWTUCKET:
Healthcare as a Right – Protect Medicaid and ensure healthcare access for all.
Food Security for All Ages – No child or veteran should go hungry while billionaires get tax cuts.
Justice Over Hate – End funding for programs that undermine communities and erode freedoms.
Through the power of humor, resistance, and cats, we’ll deliver a loud and clear message—we will not tolerate discrimination, cruelty, or authoritarianism.
Time to Join the Movement!
Don’t Just Sit There—Make Hisstory 🐈😈
Be a part of the MEOWTUCKET protest. Whether you join us on the island, amplify our efforts online, or support from afar, every action counts.

Not able to attend? Donate to the cause or share a protest selfie with you and your furry friend. JD Vance’s policies may be scary, but nothing’s scarier than a bunch of organized cat lovers on a mission.
Remember, fascists hate joy—and we’re bringing plenty of it. Together, we’ll fight for freedom, fairness, and the right to be petty. See you on MEOWTUCKET!

I cannot make the signal link work (insert crying cat emoji here). It’s bumming me out bc I am flying out to MEOWTUCKET and want to be in the loop while I plaster flyers everywhere.
